Scale
Vegetables
- 4 cups fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-size pieces
Dressing
- 10.5 oz. can cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
Toppings
- 1 2/3 cups crispy fried onion strings, divided
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat Oven - Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly coat a 3-quart casserole dish with non-stick spray and set it aside.
- Cook Green Beans - Bring a pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook until fork tender, about 10 minutes. Drain thoroughly and set aside.
- Prepare Soup Mixture - In the prepared casserole dish, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper until smooth.
- Combine Ingredients - Add the cooked green beans, 2/3 cup of the crispy fried onion strings, and all of the shredded sharp cheddar cheese to the soup mixture. Stir well to evenly coat the green beans.
- Bake Casserole - Place the casserole dish in the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the center is bubbly and heated through.
- Add Topping and Finish Baking - Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining fried onion strings evenly over the top. Return it to the oven for an additional 5 minutes to crisp the topping.
- Serve - Remove from the oven and serve immediately to enjoy the creamy, cheesy, and crispy goodness.
Notes
- For a gluten-free version, substitute the cream of mushroom soup and fried onion strings with gluten-free alternatives.
- If fresh green beans are not available, you can use frozen green beans; adjust cooking time accordingly.
- To add extra flavor, you can mix in a teaspoon of soy sauce or garlic powder into the soup mixture.
- Make sure to drain green beans well after boiling to avoid a watery casserole.
- The casserole can be prepared ahead of time and baked just before serving; add the crispy onion topping before the final bake.
