Description

A creamy and flavorful Sour Cream and Onion Chicken recipe featuring tender chicken breasts cooked to perfection and smothered in a rich sour cream and caramelized onion sauce. Perfect for a comforting and quick dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken

  • 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter divided

Sauce

  • 1 medium onion sliced
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup full-fat sour cream
  • Fresh chopped parsley optional, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare chicken: Cut the chicken breasts in half lengthwise to create 4 thinner pieces. Sprinkle evenly with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Heat pan and cook chicken: Add olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter to a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add chicken pieces and cook for 5-6 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature of 165°F). Transfer chicken to a plate and set aside.
  3. Sauté onions: Lower heat to medium and add remaining 1 tablespoon butter to the skillet. Add sliced onions and sauté until softened and lightly browned, about 10-15 minutes, adjusting heat to prevent burning.
  4. Add garlic: Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Deglaze pan: Pour in chicken broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan to incorporate flavor.
  6. Make sauce: Stir in sour cream until smooth, gently heating the sauce for a couple of minutes without letting it bubble to prevent curdling.
  7. Combine and serve: Return chicken to the skillet and spoon sauce over the top. Adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and serve immediately.

Notes

  • If the sauce is too thick, add a little more chicken broth to reach the desired consistency.
  • For extra richness, use full-fat sour cream as recommended.
  • Cooking onions low and slow prevents burning and develops natural sweetness.
  • Ensure the sauce stays on low heat while adding sour cream to avoid curdling.
  • Serve with rice, potatoes, or vegetables for a complete meal.
